Could Portland become the world's destination for women in AI, Robotics, and Space?
Imagine a first-of-its-kind all-women's global university in the Portland Metro dedicated to the disciplines reshaping human civilization: Machine Learning, AI, Robotics, and Space.
This proposal seeks to elevate the Portland Metro region to a new level.
Portland at a Crossroads
The Portland region faces an inflection point. The Portland Metro Chamber’s 2026 State of the Economy warns of serious challenges for our economic future in the areas of growth, jobs, competitiveness, and affordability:
Growth
Slower population growth, talent pipeline is thinning
Jobs
Economic center of gravity shifting away, falling employment
Competitiveness
Growing structural challenges, not cyclical
Affordability
Housing starts slowing sharply, affordable housing out of reach for many

Left unchanged, these challenges will define Portland’s trajectory for a generation — and that future will be poorer in every way.
Portland needs bold ideas — ones that create thousands of new jobs, attract global talent, build lasting economic strength, and give the region something to believe in again. The gap between Portland’s urgent need and the world’s unmet opportunity is exactly where this proposal sits.
Women in STEM
At the same time, something powerful is happening. Women are earning STEM degrees at record rates. They are leading breakthrough research in AI, designing the next generation of robots, building the Starships that will take us into space, and earning seats on future space missions. They bring with them perspectives and ways of thinking that these fields — and the world — need more of.
Yet nowhere in the world is there a university built specifically to accelerate their leadership and unlock their full potential in these disciplines. Women in STEM are an add-on, not a dedicated mission.
What we’re proposing
A new graduate university. All women. Global in reach. Dedicated to Machine Learning, AI, Robotics, and Space — four disciplines that will define the next fifty years — with foundational technologies like quantum computing woven into the research agenda from day one.
Ideas like this need a home. The Portland Metro happens to have something rare: a large, established technology campus in Beaverton with infrastructure, transit access, and scale that few metropolitan areas can match. Whether any portion of that land could ever support this vision is an open question — and now is the right time to ask it.
Cornell Tech changed the trajectory of New York City's technology leadership on just 12.5 acres. A fraction of what exists in Beaverton could be enough to start something equally consequential.
